- Squill has been used as a rodenticide for thousands of years. There is evidence that it was used by the Romans as a cardiotonic. It was used by the ancient Egyptians to treat edema and was thought to be an expectorant and emetic. The medicinal use of squill was documented by Pythagoras in the 6th century BC for coughs.
